Chip VanderWier received his BFA with emphases in Sculpture and Ceramics from Grand Valley State University in 1997. He lives and works as an artist in Muskegon, Michigan, finding much inspiration from the surrounding natural environment. In 2013 Vander Wier earned his M.Ed at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, having completed his Visual Arts Education certificate in 2011. He currently teaches Ceramics at Muskegon Community College as well as Ceramics and Sculpture at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp during the summer. Currently, Vander Wier has been working on "metal drawings". These drawings tell a story of humor and whimsy through low relief wall sculptures made from mild and stainless steel. VanderWier's sculptures are primarily kinetic and/or interactive. Intriguing and playful, his sculptures evoke elements of curiosity and wonderment. VanderWier was recently recognized for his sculpture, Bell on Wheels, during ArtPrize 2012; he was listed in the Juried “Top 25 Short List “ as one of five pieces of artwork chosen for the category of Best Use of Urban Space. His sculpture Wind Indicator with Red Fan received the Grand Haven ArtWalk 2011 Purchase Award.
